What’s the big deal about eating healthy?

We’ve all heard it before: eat fewer calories than you burn, stay away from trans-fat, don’t eat before bed, and the list goes on.

How much of this information is trustworthy? What is the impact of healthy eating?

Let’s take a look!

The Harvard School of Public Health has stated:

“Emerging research suggests that some foods and eating patterns may make it easier to keep calories in check, while others may make people more likely to overeat.”

The foods we eat have a big impact on how we feel in the short-term, and especially in the long-term. We can reduce weight gain and increase wellness with slight diet changes.

The Harvard School of Public Health has summarized their research by recommending that we:

  • Choose minimally processed, whole foods whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, healthful sources of protein (fish, poultry, beans), and plant oils.
  • Limit sugared beverages, refined grains, potatoes, red and processed meats, and other highly processed foods, such as fast food.

Here are some additional tips from The Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University:

  • Make healthier food convenient, attractive, and normal.
  • They recommend having a fruit bowl that is out in the open.
