Prolotherapy

What is Prolotherapy / RMT? (Regenerative Medicine Therapy)

Prolotherapy is also known as “nonsurgical ligament reconstruction”. It is non-invasive, without surgery, or stitches. It is a treatment for chronic musculoskeletal conditions (joints and tendons).
The word “prolo” is short for proliferation. Proliferation is defined in the dictionary as the growth or production of cells by multiplication of parts. Prolotherapy treatment enhances the growth and formation of new ligaments, tendons and cartilage in areas where there is weakness or excess scar tissue. Any joint in the body can be treated with prolotherapy regardless of when the injury happened.
Prolotherapy is a natural and effective treatment. By injecting the degenerated or injured ligament.tendon with a mild irritant solution, mild inflammation is triggered to tell the body to build new cell growth. Ozone is also injected to surround the tendon with oxygen to calm the inflammation asks the cells to multiply and regenerates new, healthy, stronger tissue. It can significantly impact persistent pain.

Prolotherapy vs Cortisone

Prolotherapy is a much different treatment than treating painful joint conditions with cortisone. The effects of each are dramatically different. Cortisone, like prednisone, is a corticosteroid.
Corticosteroids can weaken and permanently damage bones, ligaments, muscles, cartilage and tendons if used over a long period of time. It can also contribute to osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fractures and muscles weakness. Thus the cycle of pain reappears, more cortisone shots are administered and eventually surgery.
Prolotherapy compared to cortisone has many opposite effects. (Regenerative Medicine Therapy) triggers the body to regenerate new tissue to the ligaments, tendons and cartilage.

In healthy patients, the treatment is over 85% effective in most cases. It may take 2-4 injections spaced over a 4 week period to achieve a maximum result.
